Water and Development in Asia Castellano Principal

Introduction

Casa Asia with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID) and in collaboration with the Observatory of Central Asia, the University of Harvard and the United Nations Office to Support the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life' 2005-2015 (UNW-DPAC) organises the International Conference devoted to “Water and Development in Asia” on the 14th, 15th and 16th of December in Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza, respectively.

The main objective is to raise awareness and promote sustainable, efficient and equitable management of water in cities and regions of Asia, as a crucial element for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.

The conference will aim to become a discussion forum about the management of hydric resources in Asia from a political, economic and social perspective and it will include the participation of internationally famous experts in sustainable urban management, of representatives of multilateral organizations devoted to international cooperation for development and of high representatives of several Asian cities.

These are some of the highlighted topics or the programme:

  • Main socio-economic repercussions of the scarcity of drinkable water in Asia
  • The increase of pressure on hydric resources derivative of economic growth and of the fast process of urbanization in the Asian continent
  • Public-private collaboration for the improvement of the management and the infrastructures of hydric resources in Asia
  • The construction of the biggest dam in the world in Central Asia
  • Problems derived from the management of the Mekong Basin
